Korean Language Class

Korean Language Class
This is my first week of Beginners korean! Going in i though it would be pretty easy. The little i knew and learnt i didnt think it was that hard and according to my korean friends i have good pronunciation. Also having learnt but not necessarily studied the vowels and consonants i was confident! BOY WAS I IN FOR A SURPRISE! ITS HARD! The first day we learnt the vowels, which wasn't too bad i just realized that i had to do things step by step first the pronunciations and then memorizing the characters and the order you write them not trying to do both and the same time, which was what we were doing in class. THe second day was the most difficult. we learnt the consonants and there are more consonants than vowels so that was one issue, then they are kind of hard to pronounce and of course more characters to memorize. I was going so slow because i had not memorized the vowels yet and one of the activities was to try and pronounce vowel and consonat combinations and our homework/last activity which i didn't even get to was reading almost like 50 combinations of vowels and consonants.

Today in class we were kind of quizzed. we first had to practise the combination worksheet in groups and i was with Ruby and Phoebe but i was so embarrassed because i was the only one having difficulty ;( then the professor had the whole class read out one combination each and i couldn't pronounce mine! I really hope it gets better because this was supposed to be my fun class and its my last class of the day and i dont always want to be in a funk after class because of it!

Some of our worksheets:

Worksheet from Hell!: vowel-consonant combinations ahhhhhh

Church & KUBA Welcoming Party

Church & KUBA Welcoming Party

So this past sunday, i tried out a new church. I asked people in my KUBA group and a girl named Suzanne-She is from switzerland-who has been her for two semesters now offered to take me to church with her. It is a English-Korean Church in Sinsa, which is not to far Anam, where  stay. We met up at the train station and headed to church.

On our way to church we went past a wedding hall. Suzzane in the past has seen brides coming out and i was really excited to see a korean bride but i wasnt lucky, maybe next time. I did get some pictures lol

aww too cute! The car <3

Meet Suzanne!

Suzanne and I really hit it off and  she knows so much about korea since she has been her longer so it was nice talking to her. The church Service was awesome! The pastor is young and really funny! I also got to make some friends at the end of the service, definitely excited for next sunday.

After church we got some lunch! We found a Bibimbap place! I tried Bibimbap for the first time back at GW in Ivory at Gallery/Chinese  Buffet place. I guess because there is a dominant korean community at GW and also i know one of the guys that works there is Korean they have it. The one at GW is the "cold" Bibimbap but at the resturant there was an option for "hot" one and i prefer hot food so we both got that:)

yummy!

Top(l-R): Squid/jellyfish(suprisingly good), Cabbage Kimchi, rice-noodle/vegetable(not sure lol)
Bottom(L-R): Chinese lettuce or something, salty seaweed-i liked it!

Suzanne ready to Dig in lol
After lunch we split up because she lives in a different district and i went back home to get ready for the KUBA Welcoming Party! They have one every year after the first week of school and we all get together! This years theme was Black Light party and we all wore black and white and each group had a different color! I am in Group 8 and we had orange! UPdate i have also been adopted by group 4 which is the same group as Phoebe and Kenneth and Jacob and their group is also a lot of fun!

First 4 day weekends of many

First 4 day weekends of many

So unlike back at GWU where it seems like at least one BME/ECE classes has to be on friday, for the first time in college i do not have FRIDAY CLASSES= 4 Day Weekend.

I decided to be productive on friday and woke up and met with some other friends/exchange students at 7:15am. Yeah, go figure, the one day i don't have classes is also when i have to get somewhere by 7 am lol.  I don't regret it because we thought leaving by 7:15am would ensure that we wouldn't have to wait on a long line. When we got there though there was like 100 people ahead of us lol and the place wasn't even open yet so we made our way to the back of the line. While on the line, one of the exchange students, Julie, who is half korean taught me and another exchange student, Adriana, hangul!

Thank You Julie!!! Now i just have to study and keep getting better! Next week we start our beginners korean class so i'm excited!
Everything worked out well for all of us and we submitted out application and left around 11pm or so and we'll be back to pick the card up on the 22nd.
Pictures at the Alien Registeration place:

I was number 2111

People waiting for their number to be called

more people lol

After we decided to go to Gangdam because it was close by, i haven't been there in the daytime lol and one of my friends Holly needed to go to an English Bookstore there.

oppa Gangdam Style

Gangdam!
So Gangdam is a district in Seoul and its know to be the more posh/expensive area and for high-end shopping!

We also were pretty hungry so we got some food:
Adriana, Marieke, Holly

Fried Dumplings, "Spicy" vegetables!

:)

When i got home i got ready for our Banquet/Research symposium with KU &GWU!

Dean Dolling, the GWU Engineering school Dean, Dean of KU Engineering professors from KU and GWU, us and KU students who have and were going to study abroad at GWU and were engineers were all there! It was really a great experience. We got to meet Simon Lee, the CEO of Samsung and the person who had the vision for the GWU & KU exchange program and also gave us money to come to Korea! We all got to go up and thank him and talk about our time at KU and in Korea so far! The food was soooooo Good and Fancy! I cant even remeber how many courses we had and for dessert we had Tiramisu!!!!!!!! :)

GWU Clan

Min Jung, she was at GWU 2 semesters ago. She is so sweet and we will be hanging out soon. Kyu won was at GWU last semester and we became friends and it was really good to see her again and hopefully hang out soon :)

the GWU Clan, Kyu Won and Hee Dong. Hee Dong was also at GWU last semester.

Richard was at GWU previously! he's amazing and he also lived in London when he was younger ands still has his accent *ahhh* and Jeonhghan, he is HILARIOUS!

Shawn Photobombing with my picture with the kU Guys :)

Afterwards we all went out to a restaurant where we had this chicken and potato soup, it was soooo good! probably my favourite individual dish!!!! cant remember the name, i'll have to ask her dong or Richard! They also taught us traditional korean games while eating and songs it was really fun! Definitely hope we can all get together as a group again.

Us leaving the restaurant:

It was still pretty early so after that i went with Kenneth and jacob and hung out with their KUBA group and met more people and hung out, it was fun! We ended up at Daddy J's which was good because then i was closer home and i called it a night :)

Great day!!!!!!! :)

School Days

School Days

So just  a quick update nothing exciting!

I am starting to settle in on my classes, although im considering switching to another section for one of them because i dont like how the professor teaches but we'll see. it is really nice knowing Do Yoon and SanSing because i know at least 2 familiar faces in my classes.

Today for Lunch I met with He Won the girl i met yesterday and she introduced me to one of her friends. We went to Dos Tacos, which is slightly like a korean spin on Mexican food. It was good, i had a chicken quesadilla. He Won and I realized how much we had in common in terms of future and career aspirations, which was really cool. We definitely will be hanging out more and I am so happy i met her.

The GWU students had a short meeting with the dean and some other administrative people from the school of engineering! They wanted to check in on us and see how we are doing. They were very surprised to know we had no complaints and also that we liked Korean Food! lol

Im looking forward to our banquet/research symposium, apparently Dean Dolling will be there also.
We also asked about the possibility of getting internships and the Dean says there is a possibility he can get us internships at Samsung!!!!! I love this place!!!!!

Everything is kind of slowing down, not really going out as much since school is back in session and im kind of sick. The weekend is coming up and KUBA has some events planned so im excited!

Thats it for now! To my friends at GWU Yahyyyyyyy Snow Day! and Yahy Macklemore for spring fest!!!!! kinda of jealous but I LOVE KOREA so i'll get over it lol! GOOD LUCK ON FINALS GUYS!! <3

School: Day 2

School: Day 2

So today started out not soo good. I woke up today and my throat was sore, and i seemed to have gotten a cold. so this morning i stacked up on the Vitamin C. Put some in my water bottle, took vitamins, had hot chocolate, took Day Quil pills, everything i could think of and thankfully brought from home. The walk to class, again on the science campus and this time i had to be there by 9am, was soooo brutal. All the food/liquids and medicine i took made me feel nauseous.

Thankfully my first class was in one of the buildings i went to yesterday so i went in and took a nap on my desk. I woke up when a student came in. I seem to make/only make friends with the people i sit near or that come in early with me lol. His name is Sang Sin, and he too speaks pretty good english. Apparently we have 3 classes together and he remembered me lol. He translated for me when the TA was talking before classes started.

My first class was quite interesting although i was a little sleepy. And the professor speaks good english and is really nice. he says he feels like we are his sons, *Cough* and daughter! I AM THE ONLY FOREIGNER AND GIRL IN MY CLASS TODAY! Not that this bothers me but its just an observation lol :). My professor was in the first class at KU when Electrical Engineering started and this is his last year and semester and he is retiring. Class went pretty well and he has Open-book Midterms! AWESOME!!!!

After class Sang Sin gave me this:

Just like Do Yoon, He wants to help me and we exchanged numbers!!!!! He also tried to help me find my lab whose bulding was not listed on my schedule! I ended up not going to the lab and going to the One-stop-Center, where mark works and having him add me to a thursday lab that way i can be in the same lab hopefully as sang Sin and Do Yoon!

After giving up on the lab i decided to go to the hana square, equivalent of Marvin Center for the Science Campus and use the computer. I couldn't figure out how to login and i asked two girls sitting near me and turns out one of the although korean is an exchange student from colorado in the school of Biological Sciences. we exchanged numbers and we'll hang out soon. It was definitely a good day in terms of meeting new people and making a girl-friend. Despite the fact that there are not many girls in my classes i have not really made friends with the few girls in my classes... In due time i guess.

I really miss hanging out with my KUBA Group and Buddies!

I stopped by the bookstore to get some of my books i paid equivalent of $81 for TWO ENGINEERING TEXT-Books BRand New From the BOOKSTORE! Can i just stay in this Country lol

Pictures from campus today:

After getting my books, i decided to go to the library on the Science campus this time and do some studying! The library is quite nice. Just like you register/reserve rooms at GWU, you can reserve tables in the general study area. I didn't know this and just walked in and sat down.  No One came to my table so that was good. While studying, i looked up and see a   African person! its really obvious when there are very few of us lol! Im not bothered. As he is walking by obviously he notices me and then my Nigerian-Radar clicks in and i realize he is nigerian! HEY! HEY!!!! okay fine, also i saw he had tribal marks lol! so he sees me and i ask him and he confirms. We end up sitting at the same table and studying.  That was cool, made another friend and my first surprisingly nigerian one lol! Like i always say, Nigerians live everywhere!

Hopefully my sore throat goes away, i had to miss the cheering activity, where KUBA teaches us the chants and songs at the games. Although there are no games this semester so I'm not too sad!

Not only is phoebe sick but so are James, Tony, and Shawn! looks like something is going round or we are reacting to the changing in weather!! ITS SOOOO COLD HERE!

Going out to dinner with a group of my friends tonight!

Bye :)
